The Innocent Mistress is a restoration comedy which employs stock device slap stick humor and wit: misplaced billet-doux, disguise, social class etc. The play is fast paced as many of the characters banter among one another centered mainly on the theme of courtship. Many of the characters threaten one another and there are accusations of dismemberment and love affairs.

The set design is loud, rich and provocative of the architecture of the period. The floor is highly detailed featuring floral motifs and naughty cherubs. The door is the emphasis of the design as it was used for a lot of big entrances and characters making quick escapes. The colour palette is quite neutral so that the characters in their colourful/ Bold costumes really “pop out” as well as the props and furniture from scene to scene.
